TAKE WHAT YOU CAN!  GIVE NOTHING BACK!

TI liked it for a few reasons. First the river!  Who doesn't like a river on their land? It is located just off the main road through the area. It has a mixture of flat land that we can lease to a farmer as well as rolling hills that are perfect for tree growth. And interestingly it is abutted against the USA!  It actually forms part of the international border.

Our Carbon Sink

Here is a survey of the land: The straight line along the south edge is the international border. The thin line that isn't part of the property is an old railway line that has been pulled up.

These lines made famous in "Pirates of the Caribbean" are appropos to our goal.  Our family wants to take all of the carbon we can out of the atmosphere and put as little as we can back. We enjoy traveling which is one of the biggest contributors to a carbon footprint. We decided to buy some land and plant trees.  Enough trees that we would be carbon emission negative.

I wanted some land in British Columbia, Canada for several reasons.  My brother lives in BC and could take of overseeing planting.  At the time of purchase the Canadian dollar was somewhat cheap compared to the US dollar.  Finally, I consider Canada my home so was more interested in buying there.

Some rough calculations suggested somewhere between 50 and 100 acres of newly planted trees would be enough to mitigate all the carbon emissions for my family of three and my brother and his partner.

The land needed to be either bare or recently logged and capable of growing trees at a reasonable rate with no irrigation.  An internet search returned surprisingly few appropriate properties.  However, one in particular stood out although bigger than I needed. This is the listing I found:
